At the end of August we went to a conference in San Diego and then had a few days to relax. We walked the beach, visited wineries, ate good food, drank good (and bad) wine, visited art festivals and galleries, bought some contemporary art, and spent one day driving a Ford Mustang convertible. It was a fun and memorable week. Back at home, we were thrust back into our crazy schedules without missing a beat. You just pick up where you left off and your vacation seems like a distant memory.
Leif is back into soccer, cub scouts, and Spanish class. He has more homework this year, which causes some complaining. I was looking for a way to show him how fortunate he is to go to school. One of the library books he brought home was a kids almanac. One page talked about child labor around the world, and it showed a photo of a young boy digging a ditch. Leif read the paragraph that accompanied the photo. He was shocked to learn that some kids have to work to support their family and they never go to school. Ever since he read that, he has not complained about doing homework. We all get in our own little bubbles and sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live in America.
Justus loves kindergarten. He is learning to write his name with more clarity and he is learning to write the other letters in the alphabet. He goes to Spanish class with Leif. I think Justus is having a growth spurt. A few nights ago he ate 11 chicken nuggets, pudding, and a bowl of cereal just before bed. For lunch I pack him a PB&J sandwich on 2 slices of high-calorie, large-size bread along with other stuff in his lunchbox, and he eats everything!
Cooler weather has arrived and some of the leaves are beginning to change colors. We took advantage of autumn's arrival by hiking a mountain to the summit with some friends. Justus made his first summit without any assistance! When we left home in the morning, the fog was thick, but the higher up we went, the less foggy it became. We hiked so high that we looked down on the clouds. It was an amazing experience. The clouds below looked like the waves on an ocean. In the picture, Rob and I are sitting on opposite boulders, the sea of clouds below us.

I'm impressed that Leif made the comparison between his life and the life of a child laborer and made some adjustments in his thinking. Justus, way to go, cleaning up your plate and pumping up your height!
Grandpa
What an impressive picture. Even as small as it is, the view is fabulous. Thanks for sending the picture(s).
Leif and Justus both in Spanish class? I think Gpa. and Gma. need to get with the program as well. Glad to hear of Leif's insightful conclusion after reading the story. Way to go, Leif. Justus, are you getting ready to climb another mountain?
Love,
Grandma
